Number game
501........ Just a number!!!!Insignificant to all and sundry. But to me it means a lot. Its like a chip loaded with childhood memories and images.... fading a bit, though due to the passage of time.
A friend of mine called me the other day and reminded me of 501. Gosh!!! I was startled to learn he still remembered. I gleefully back paddled more than 50 years in a hurry to my kiddy days.A broad grin on my face I reminisced.
The day the shining black instrument called the "Telephone" made its way into our house was a day of celebration. It was jet black with a round dial in the front. A telephone on our own? I was thrilled. Our number was 45 40 41.
My grandfather, dadabhai, we used to call him, thought of a novel way to remember this number. In those days 501 bar soap was a widely used washing soap and could be found in almost all households. Dadabhai showed us how we could turn this 501 into our telephone number. "Its simple" he said."Just add 4 in front of each number in 501 and you get 45 40 41."he chuckled. It stayed with me and all my friends and relatives for more than 15 years.Till today whenever I meet any of my old friends they ask me"Hey!!! Have your phone number changed or is it still 45.........
501 is forever..........
